WHAT’S IN A NAME (or a Mission Statement)?

Hey, folks.  So the blog has been rocking and rolling over the past couple of weeks with some great interviews and editorials from theatre people both local and national.  Stay tuned for more of that in the coming weeks.  But for now, I am pleased to announce the title for our upcoming night of new work (cue trumpets).  It is….

 BASTARDS OF YOUNG

The name comes from a Replacements song (off of their album Tim for those keeping track) and to me, it’s prettytim much a cool way to say we’ve got some brand new plays with a lot of energy, heart, and balls.  So many ten minute plays are gimmicky or fail to tell a complete story, and while a great deal of our scripts are definitely high concept, they take their concepts seriously.  There are no puns or wink-at-the-audience goofiness.  This isn’t to say they aren’t funny (some of them definitely are), but they’re wonderfully subtle with their cleverness.  Regardless of how crazy the subject matter of each script is, the writing presents itself as “this is how these characters would react in this situation.”  And more importantly, they all encompass our…

 BRAND NEW MISSION STATEMENT!!!

That’s right!  Bet you didn’t see that one coming, eh?  Although Tympanic is still wholeheartedly dedicated to new work, we’ve retooled our priorities and aesthetic quite a bit.  Love it or hate it, here’s what we’re all about:

The Tympanic Theatre Company is dedicated to producing new work with fantastical, frightening, or absurd subject matter that provokes as well as entertains.  We invite our audience to explore new theatrical worlds of fresh, visceral storytelling, and extraordinary characters.

And there you have it.  We steer clear of the kitchen sink and hope to give you a theatrical experience that is exciting and unique.  Check the homepage for detailed info on BASTARDS OF YOUNG and keep checking the blog for upcoming interviews with our playwrights as well as other fun developments!

While I've got your attention, remember that it's not too late to donate to our online fundraiser at http://tympanictheatre.chipin.com/non-profit-status-fall-festival

Just something to think about.
